Diagnostic Imaging

Our vets have access to the latest portable diagnostic equipment that can be used on your yard. These include:

Radiography (x-ray)

Radiographs, or X-rays, are frequently used during lameness evaluations to assess bones and joints. We primarily use portable digital radiography (DR) systems for lower limb imaging, which is particularly beneficial when transporting an injured horse is difficult or unsafe.

Our state-of-the-art portable X-ray equipment allows us to take high-quality images directly at your yard, with results available on screen within seconds for immediate review.

Digital radiography provides higher-quality images compared to traditional film systems. This enhances our diagnostic capabilities and eliminates the need to wait for image development. All radiographs are securely stored in our database, making it easy to compare with previous images and enabling rapid referral to a specialist via email when necessary.

Ultrasonography

Ultrasonography is a versatile and widely used diagnostic tool. It plays a key role in diagnosing and assessing a range of orthopaedic conditions, including injuries to joints, tendons, and ligaments. It is also invaluable for monitoring the healing process in these cases.

Beyond musculoskeletal issues, ultrasound is useful for evaluating causes of abdominal pain – such as colic, internal swellings, or liver disease – as well as for performing cardiology assessments. It also allows for safe, guided biopsies of internal organs like the liver and kidneys.

In reproductive work, ultrasonography is routinely used to monitor mares’ reproductive cycles and confirm pregnancies.

Endoscopy

Endoscopy is a valuable tool for helping to diagnose a range of respiratory conditions, including nosebleeds, allergic reactions, and lung disease. It is particularly useful for detecting airway issues that only become apparent during exercise or stress, such as those causing abnormal breathing noises during work.

Using a flexible or rigid endoscope with an integrated camera and light source, we can visualise internal structures in detail—without the need for invasive surgery. Endoscopes are also used to perform gastroscopy.
